What to look for in your Recruiter

It is so important to do your homework when looking at contracting a recruitment company to help with your recruitment needs. There are so many different types of agencies out there now so you really can afford to be picky. It is important you know as much as possible about your recruiter so that a simple hiring process doesn’t turn into an expensive and unrewarding process. There are a few key things to keep an eye out for when engaging a recruiter:

Engagement – It is essential when you first approach a recruiter or vice versa they take the time to find out as much as possible about your business, your workplace environment and existing staff. The more they know about you the more likely they are to find the perfect candidate for you. The best recruiters should act like a partner to your business. They should attempt to find out everything from how you have hired in the past to what your business culture is like. They should also be actively working for you behind the scenes. A good recruiter will constantly be keeping an eye out for people that would complement your current staff.

Trust – You need to have faith in your recruitment agent that they have a solid understanding of your business and that they will find you the right person. If you do not believe your recruitment agent will do this, then it would be wise to take your business elsewhere. Unfortunately, there is no set way to determine whether or not a recruitment agency is trustworthy; it is really up to you as the client. Do whatever you feel is necessary to make sure you are comfortable with your recruiter. From putting them on the spot to test their skills, to asking them about their knowledge of the industry and the current job market – if they are unsure ask them how they plan to re-search this. They should be confident answering any questions you have. Make sure your recruiter asks lots of questions in turn about your business. Again, the more they know, the more likely they are to find you the right candidate.

Value Add – What else can your recruiter do for you? Good recruitment agencies will not only provide you with the perfect candidate but should offer a range of additional services.

Many recruitment agencies will offer to assist with the following:

  • Preparing the job description
  • Provide interview strategies and instruction on interview techniques
  • Handling the salary / rate negotiations
  • Prepare new starters for their first day
  • Information on any part of the hiring / recruitment process

A clear indicator of a good recruiter is whether or not they offer a guarantee on placement. If the placement doesn’t work out for any reason within a predetermined timeframe, will the recruiter replace with a new candidate? This demonstrates that the recruiter is confident in their work and in their understanding of your business/culture.

By keeping these simple points in mind business owners can be confident in their choice of recruitment agency. It will also help ensure that you and your recruiter are on the same page. Ultimately this will save you time, money and effort.
