WA Unemployment Down – Sept 2017

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported today that the Western Australian seasonally adjusted unemployment rate has dropped from 5.9% in August to 5.7% in September, 2017. “This has been felt across the WA market when talking to many our clients over the past two months”, says Natalie Munro – Senior Recruitment Consultant at Wood. “Many of the companies I have been speaking to over the last couple of months have been much more positive about the outlook going forward. Most are West Australian businesses and are all experiencing a positive feel to the market with many believing we are finally turning the corner after a long downturn”, says Munro.

The results were much better for New South Wales and Tasmania with these states recording a rate drop of 0.3%. NSW now has a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 4.6% There were small decreases of 0.1% for Victoria and Australia nationally while Queensland and South Australia actually recorded small increases.

Female participation rate reached a record high of 59.9%
Trend employment ratio 61.6% is highest since August 2012
Australia’s trend estimate of employment increased by 23,800 persons
the number of unemployed persons decreasing by 2,200 persons

In September 2017, increases in trend employment were observed in all states and territories except the Northern Territory where employment decreased by 800 persons. The largest increases were in New South Wales (up 7,600 persons) and Queensland (up 7,500 persons).Similarly, over the past year, increases in employment were also observed in all states and territories except Northern Territory (down 3,200 persons). The largest increases were in Victoria (up 96,500 persons), Queensland (up 95,900 persons) and New South Wales (up 79,100 persons). The highest annual employment growth rates were in Queensland (4.1 per cent), Tasmania (3.9 per cent), Victoria (3.1 per cent) and Western Australia (2.9 per cent). Courtesy http://www.abs.gov.au
