WA Unemployment Steady

The January 2018 figures have been released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and both the national and state based seasonally adjusted unemployment rates remained steady at 5.5% and 5.7% respectively.

Some further key features of the January data include:

  • The participation rate seasonally adjusted decreased by 0.1 pts to 65.6%
  • Monthly hours worked in all jobs decreased 1.2 million hours.
  • The unemployment to population ratio remained steady at 62.0 percent
  • Seasonally adjusted employment increased by 16,000 persons from December 2017 to January 2018.
  • Since January 2017, full-time employment has increased by 293,200 persons
  • Since January 2017, part-time employment has increased by 110,100 persons

State based statistics included:

  • The largest increase in the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was in New South Wales which increased by 0.3% to 5.1%
  • Queensland and South Australia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rates increased by 0.1 percentage points.
  • The largest decrease was in Tasmania (down 0.7 percentage points).
  • The seasonally adjusted participation rate increased in Queensland and South Australia (0.5 and 0.4 percentage points respectively).
