WA Unemployment Steady

The January 2018 figures have been released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and both the national and state based seasonally adjusted unemployment rates remained steady at 5.5% and 5.7% respectively.
The number of people now in jobs though January increased by 23,000 to almost 12.5 million although unemployment increased 2,600 to 720,200 according to the abs.gov.au
Some further key features of the January data include:
- The participation rate seasonally adjusted decreased by 0.1 pts to 65.6%
- Monthly hours worked in all jobs decreased 1.2 million hours.
- The unemployment to population ratio remained steady at 62.0 percent
- Seasonally adjusted employment increased by 16,000 persons from December 2017 to January 2018.
- Since January 2017, full-time employment has increased by 293,200 persons
- Since January 2017, part-time employment has increased by 110,100 persons
State based statistics included:
- The largest increase in the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was in New South Wales which increased by 0.3% to 5.1%
- Queensland and South Australia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rates increased by 0.1 percentage points.
- The largest decrease was in Tasmania (down 0.7 percentage points).
- The seasonally adjusted participation rate increased in Queensland and South Australia (0.5 and 0.4 percentage points respectively).
