Our monthly update on People and Jobs….. and a short one this month…….
Unemployment: Just released for January 2025, the National Unemployment rate has increased by .1% to 4.1% seasonally adjusted. The rate for Western Australia has increased from 3.3% to 3.6%. Overall more people were employed in January but there were also more looking for work and unemployed.
Jobs: Job numbers in WA on the major job boards are well down. There are 14,000 jobs posted right now compared to 17,000 back in October 2024 – almost a 20% drop. The IT and Sales sectors are actually up while Accounting and Engineering are flat. Interestingly, there is a big reduction in Trades jobs posted. They are currently at a level not seen since August 2020! Perhaps the mining layoffs and starting to filter through.
Q&A: Candidates are becoming more flexible around the WFH arrangement especially for small to medium sized firms. Perhaps they are taking note of the recent media hype on the matter. With unemployment still at low rates, good quality candidates remain illusive and difficult to find. When you do find one, they generally are still very picky but it is changing, slowly.
